Information

Capped sterilized glass vials are a critical component in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, ensuring the safe storage and delivery of injectable drugs, vaccines, and biologics. These vials undergo stringent sterilization processes to maintain sterility and product integrity, making them indispensable for parenteral formulations.

This article explores the structure, sterilization methods, capping techniques, and applications of capped sterilized glass vials, highlighting their importance in modern healthcare.

1. Structure and Materials

Sterilized glass vials are typically made from Type I borosilicate glass, known for its:

  • High chemical resistance (prevents leaching)

  • Low thermal expansion (withstands sterilization temperatures)

  • Excellent clarity (allows visual inspection)

Components of a Capped Sterilized Vial:

  • Glass vial body (molded or tubular)

  • Rubber stopper (elastomeric closure, often made of bromobutyl or chlorobutyl rubber)

  • Aluminum cap (secures the stopper via crimping)

  • Flip-off seal (tamper-evident feature for safety)

2. Sterilization Methods

To ensure sterility, glass vials undergo one of the following processes:

A. Depyrogenation & Dry Heat Sterilization

  • Temperature: 250°C–350°C for 30+ minutes

  • Purpose: Destroys endotoxins and microbial contaminants

  • Common for: Pre-sterilized empty vials

B. Steam Sterilization (Autoclaving)

  • Conditions: 121°C at 15 psi for 20 minutes

  • Used for: Vials filled with heat-stable solutions

C. Gamma Irradiation

  • Dose: 25–50 kGy

  • Ideal for: Heat-sensitive products (e.g., protein-based drugs)

3. Capping Process

After filling, vials are sealed using:

A. Crimping

  • An aluminum cap is mechanically crimped over the rubber stopper.

  • Ensures a hermetic seal, preventing contamination and leakage.

B. Flip-Off Seals

  • Provide tamper evidence and easy access for healthcare professionals.

4. Key Applications

Capped sterilized glass vials are used for:

  • Vaccines (e.g., COVID-19, influenza)

  • Injectable drugs (antibiotics, biologics, chemotherapy)

  • Biopharmaceuticals (monoclonal antibodies, insulin)

  • Diagnostic reagents
